Agkistri has a rich cultural history dating back to antiquity. The island was known as Kekryphalia in ancient times and was mentioned by Homer as an ally of Aegina in the Trojan War. Evidence of habitation from prehistoric times can be found in the remains of a prehistoric settlement on the top of Cape Bariama and scattered antiquities. The Byzantine and post-Byzantine landmarks such as churches built with local materials (like slab stones), fortification remains, pre-industrial buildings such as wells, windmills, and shipyards, the Cycladic style of settlements, the memorial monuments of recent history, the influences of Arvanites in local architecture and art, collectively form a multidimensional cultural identity of Agkistri, inviting visitors to explore its rich heritage.
